BYD Seal OTA Updates: How to Keep Your Software Always Current
Share
The BYD Seal supports over-the-air (OTA) software updates that can be triggered from the infotainment touchscreen via System > Version > Vehicle Version > Upgrade, or remotely through the BYD App under More Functions > OTA Upgrade. The car must be in Park gear with a stable network connection and sufficient battery charge. Do not move, charge, or discharge the vehicle during the update. If an update fails, retry it. If it fails again, contact a BYD authorised dealer.
What Is OTA and Why It Matters?
OTA stands for Over-the-Air. It allows BYD to push software improvements directly to your Seal without a dealer visit. Your car can genuinely improve after purchase, adding features and fixing issues through downloaded software.
The BYD Seal owner's manual describes OTA as a vehicle software upgrade function that keeps "your vehicle functions in the latest state." Updates are prompted automatically when available, and you choose when to install them.
What Gets Updated?
BYD's OTA system can update multiple vehicle systems. Not every update touches all areas, but these components are eligible:
- Infotainment system: Navigation maps, touchscreen responsiveness, app compatibility, voice assistant improvements. For hands-free controls while driving, see our voice control commands guide.
- ADAS calibration: Adjustments to ACC, lane-keeping, AEB detection, and camera processing. Our Seal ADAS features guide covers every system that benefits from these updates.
- Battery Management System (BMS): Charging curve optimization, thermal management tuning, SOC estimation accuracy. Keeping BMS current helps maximise your Seal's battery lifespan.
- Driving dynamics: Regenerative braking calibration, throttle mapping, drive mode behaviour
- Bug fixes: Touchscreen glitches, Bluetooth issues, sensor corrections
How to Check for Updates?
Method 1: Touchscreen
- Park the vehicle safely in Park gear.
- Open the infotainment touchscreen.
- Navigate to System > Version > Vehicle Version > Upgrade.
- If an update is available, choose to update immediately or schedule for later.
Method 2: BYD App
- Open the BYD App on your smartphone.
- Navigate to More Functions > OTA Upgrade.
- Follow the prompts to initiate the update remotely.
When a software update is available, a prompt notification appears on the touchscreen automatically. You can act immediately, schedule for later, or trigger via the phone app.
OTA Update Requirements
| Measurement | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Gear position | Must be in Park (P) |
| Battery level | Sufficient charge (fully charged recommended) |
| Network | Stable mobile data connection |
| Charging status | Cannot charge or discharge during update |
| OBD port | No third-party devices plugged in |
| Vehicle movement | Do not move the vehicle during upgrade |
| Available functions | Smart key lock/unlock, interior lights, hazard lights, window switch only |
| Update trigger | Touchscreen or BYD App |
| Scheduling | Immediate, appointment, or via mobile phone |
Wi-Fi vs Mobile Data
- Mobile data: Default method. Works anywhere with cellular coverage. Slower for large updates.
- Wi-Fi (where available): Faster downloads. Best when parked at home.
- Key rule: A stable signal matters more than speed. Interrupted downloads cause failures.
How Long Do Updates Take?
- Minor updates (bug fixes): 10 to 30 minutes
- Major system updates: 30 to 60 minutes
- Full infotainment refresh: Up to 90 minutes in rare cases
During the entire process, only smart key locking/unlocking, interior lights, hazard warning lights, and window switches remain functional. All other vehicle functions are inoperable until the update completes.
What to Do If an Update Fails?
The Seal owner's manual provides a clear procedure:
- Retry the update. Most failures are caused by temporary network interruptions.
- Check your connection. Ensure stable cellular or Wi-Fi signal.
- Verify battery level. Low SOC during the update can trigger a safety abort.
- Contact BYD. If the retry fails, contact a BYD authorised dealer or service provider for handling.
Do not power cycle the vehicle or disconnect the 12V battery during a failed update. This can corrupt the installation. If dashboard warning lights appear after an attempted update, check our dashboard warning lights guide for what each symbol means.
How to Check Your Installed Version?
- Open the touchscreen and navigate to System > Version.
- The current vehicle software version is displayed.
- Compare against the latest version available through the BYD App or your dealer.
Factory Reset Option
If persistent software issues occur after an update, the infotainment system can be reset to factory settings via System > Version > Factory Reset > Reset. The manual warns: during the process, do not touch any infotainment button or turn off the power supply. The reset takes two to five minutes.
A factory reset wipes personal settings (saved locations, Bluetooth pairings, preferences) but does not roll back the vehicle software version. Use this as a last resort before visiting a dealer.

What Recent OTA Updates Have Improved?
BYD pushes regular updates across its vehicle range. Common improvements Seal owners have received include:
- Charging curve optimisation: Faster DC charging speeds through refined BMS algorithms
- Battery thermal management: Better cooling and heating response in extreme temperatures
- Touchscreen responsiveness: Smoother animations and faster app loading
- Bluetooth stability: Improved phone pairing reliability and connection speed
- ADAS sensitivity tuning: Reduced false AEB triggers in slow traffic, refined ACC follow distance
- Navigation map data: Updated road networks and charging station locations
- V2L discharge stability: More consistent output during extended use sessions
Each update builds on previous versions. Skipping updates means missing cumulative improvements that compound over time.
Common Mistakes Seal Owners Make
- Starting a drive during an update. The manual states: "Do not move the vehicle during the OTA upgrade." Driving mid-update can corrupt software.
- Updating on low battery. The vehicle cannot charge during the process. Start with sufficient SOC.
- Leaving OBD devices plugged in. Third-party OBD dongles (insurance trackers, performance monitors) can interfere. Remove before updating.
- Ignoring update prompts. Postponing indefinitely means missing bug fixes, security patches, and performance improvements.
- Attempting factory reset first. Always retry the OTA update before resetting. A reset wipes settings but does not fix a corrupted download.
- Charging while updating. The manual confirms the vehicle cannot be charged or discharged during the upgrade. Unplug before starting.
