BYD Atto 3 Dashboard Warning Lights: What Every Symbol Actually Means
Share
The BYD Atto 3 instrument cluster displays over 30 warning lights and indicators. Red lights mean stop driving and seek immediate assistance. Yellow/amber lights signal caution and require a service visit soon. Green and blue indicators confirm that systems are active and operating normally. A warning light that briefly illuminates during startup is a normal self-check and does not indicate a fault.
Red Warning Lights: Stop Driving Immediately
Red lights indicate a serious safety issue. If any of these stay on or appear while driving, safely pull over and contact BYD Roadside Assistance on 1800 293 288 or your nearest authorized dealer.
| Warning Light | What It Means | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Powertrain fault | Motor or drivetrain failure detected | Do not drive. Contact BYD dealer immediately. |
| High-voltage battery fault | Battery system failure detected | Stop driving. Contact BYD dealer. |
| HV battery overheating | Battery temperature dangerously high. Flashing means leave the vehicle. | Stop immediately. Exit car if flashing. Contact BYD. |
| Steering system fault | Power steering has failed or is degraded | Park safely. Contact BYD dealer. |
| Airbag fault | Airbag system malfunction | Contact BYD dealer. Airbags may not deploy in a crash. |
| Parking brake system fault | EPB or braking system failure | Stop driving. Contact BYD dealer. |
| ABS + parking brake fault together | Complete braking system failure | Park immediately in safe place. Do not continue driving. |
| Coolant overheating | Motor coolant temperature critical | Turn off A/C and fans. Park immediately. Contact BYD. |
| PCW warning (red) | Predictive collision warning triggered | Brake immediately. Collision risk detected ahead. |
The owner's manual states: if the HV battery overheating light is flashing, stop the vehicle and leave as soon as possible. This is the most urgent warning the car can give.
Yellow/Amber Warning Lights: Service Soon
Amber lights mean the car is safe to drive short distances but needs attention at the next opportunity. Do not ignore these for extended periods.
| Warning Light | What It Means | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Tyre pressure (TPMS) | One or more tyres underinflated or sensor fault | Check tyre pressures. If "---" or "No Signal" displayed, sensor may be faulty. |
| Low SOC | High-voltage battery charge is critically low | Charge as soon as possible. Performance may be limited. |
| Driving power limit | Vehicle power output has been reduced | Normal at very low SOC or extreme temperatures. Charge the car. |
| ESC fault | Electronic stability control system malfunction | Drive carefully, especially in wet conditions. Book service. |
| AEB fault | Automatic emergency braking offline | AEB will not intervene in emergencies. Book service. See our ADAS features guide. |
| BSD fault | Blind spot detection offline | Check mirrors manually. Book service. |
| Low-voltage system fault | 12V battery or DC module issue | Book service. 12V failure can prevent vehicle startup. |
| Headlight fault | LED headlight malfunction | Contact BYD dealer for replacement. |
| Smart key warning | Key not detected or key battery low | Check key location. Replace key battery if persistent. |
Green and Blue Indicators: Systems Active
These are not warnings. They confirm that a system is switched on and functioning normally.
- Green: ACC active = Adaptive cruise control engaged and maintaining speed
- Green: ICC active = Intelligent cruise control with lane centring running
- Green: PCW (green) = Predictive collision warning system armed and monitoring
- Green: Position light = Parking lights on
- Green: HV battery charging = Battery is actively charging (flashing = charging in progress, solid = charging complete)
- Blue: High beam = High beam headlights active
- Blue: HV battery discharging = V2L discharge active (flashing).
- Grey: AVH standby = Auto Vehicle Hold ready but not engaged
- Grey: ACC standby = Cruise control ready but not actively controlling speed
Battery and Charging Warning Icons
The Atto 3 uses a colour-coded charge port indicator (visible on the vehicle body) plus instrument cluster icons for battery status:
- Solid white (charge port): Port open, no connector attached
- Flashing yellow: Charge/discharge initialising
- Solid yellow: Charging scheduled or paused
- Flashing green: Charging in progress
- Solid green: Charging complete
- Flashing blue: V2L discharging in progress
- Solid red: Charge or discharge fault detected
If the charge port shows solid red, check your charging connection, reconnect the cable, and retry. If the fault persists, contact your BYD dealer. For full charging details, see our Atto 3 OTA and connectivity guide.
ADAS System Indicators
The Atto 3 displays dedicated icons for each ADAS function. These appear as green (active), grey (standby), or amber/red (fault):
- ACC indicator: Green when active, grey on standby, amber when faulty
- BSD indicator: Active when vehicles detected in blind zone
- TSR indicator: Shows detected speed limit sign
- AEB fault: Amber when system is offline or limited
- ELKA indicator: Emergency lane keeping assist status
- Driver monitoring fault: Amber if driver attention system fails
For a full guide on every ADAS feature, activation steps, and limitations, see our complete Atto 3 ADAS guide.
ABS, ESC, and Brake System Warnings
These are the most critical safety lights on the dashboard. The owner's manual describes a clear hierarchy:
- ABS fault only (parking brake light off): Braking still works, but ABS does not. Wheels may lock during emergency braking or on slippery roads.
- ESC fault only (ABS and parking brake lights off): Vehicle stability control inactive. The car is extremely unstable in sharp turns or swerving.
- ABS fault + parking brake fault together: Park immediately. Full braking system compromised. Do not continue driving.
- EPB indicator: Electronic parking brake engaged (normal when parked). If it stays on while driving, the parking brake may be partially engaged.
When to Call Roadside Assistance vs Drive On?
| Measurement | Call Immediately (1800 293 288) | Drive to Dealer (with caution) |
|---|---|---|
| Battery overheating (flashing) | Yes, exit vehicle | No |
| Powertrain fault | Yes | No |
| ABS + parking brake fault | Yes | No |
| Steering system fault | Yes | No |
| TPMS warning (yellow tyre) | No | Yes, check pressures first |
| Low SOC warning | No | Yes, drive to charger |
| AEB/BSD fault | No | Yes, book service |
| Smart key warning | No | Yes, replace key battery |
Common Mistakes Owners Make
- Panicking over startup self-check lights. Every warning light briefly illuminates when you power on the car. This is normal. Only worry if a light stays on after a few seconds.
- Ignoring amber TPMS warnings. Low tyre pressure increases energy consumption and reduces range. A few minutes at an air pump solves it.
- Continuing to drive with red lights on. Red means stop. No exception. Pull over safely.
- Confusing charging port colours. Flashing green is normal charging. Solid red is a fault. Know the difference.
- Dismissing "driving power limited" as a fault. This is normal at very low SOC or extreme temperatures. Charge the battery and it resolves. For more on regenerative braking behaviour at low SOC, see our regen braking guide.
