BYD Atto 3 OTA Update 2026: Software Updates, New Features, and Installation Guide

The BYD Atto 3 supports over-the-air (OTA) software updates that can be triggered directly from the infotainment touchscreen via Settings > System > Version > Version Update > Upgrade, or through the BYD App on your phone. Before updating, the car must be in Park gear with a stable network connection and a fully charged or high SOC battery. Do not move, charge, or discharge the vehicle during the update. If an update fails, retry it. If it fails again, contact a BYD authorized dealer.

What Is OTA and Why It Matters for EVs?

OTA stands for Over-the-Air. It allows BYD to push software improvements directly to your Atto 3 without a dealer visit. Updates can improve infotainment responsiveness, refine ADAS behaviour, optimise battery management algorithms, and fix known bugs.

Unlike traditional cars that need a workshop visit for every software change, the Atto 3 receives updates wirelessly. This means your car can genuinely improve after purchase, adding features and fixing issues through downloaded software rather than hardware replacements.

What Gets Updated?

BYD's OTA system can push updates across multiple vehicle systems. Not every update touches all areas, but the following components are eligible:

  • Infotainment system: Navigation maps, touchscreen responsiveness, app compatibility, voice assistant improvements, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto refinements
  • ADAS calibration: Adjustments to adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping sensitivity, AEB detection parameters, and camera processing. For full details on what these systems do, see our Atto 3 ADAS features guide.
  • Battery Management System (BMS): Charging curve optimization, thermal management tuning, SOC estimation accuracy
  • Driving dynamics: Regenerative braking calibration, throttle mapping, drive mode behavior. Our regenerative braking guide explains how these settings affect your range.
  • Bug fixes: Touchscreen glitches, Bluetooth connectivity issues, sensor calibration corrections

How to Check for Available Updates?

There are two methods to check for and install OTA updates on your Atto 3:

Method 1: Touchscreen (Primary)

  1. Park the vehicle in a safe location with the gear in P.
  2. Open the infotainment touchscreen.
  3. Navigate to Settings > System > Version > Version Update > Upgrade.
  4. If an update is available, choose to update immediately or schedule it for later.

Method 2: BYD App (Remote)

  1. Open the BYD App on your smartphone.
  2. Navigate to More Functions > OTA Upgrade.
  3. Follow the prompts to initiate the update remotely.

When a software update is available, a prompt notification appears on the touchscreen automatically. You can act on it immediately or schedule the update for a time that suits your routine.

OTA Update Requirements Table

Measurement Requirement
Gear position Must be in Park (P)
Battery level Fully charged or high SOC recommended
Network Stable mobile data or Wi-Fi connection
Charging status Cannot charge or discharge during update
OBD port No third-party devices plugged in
Vehicle movement Do not move the vehicle during the update
Available functions during update Smart key lock/unlock, interior lights, hazard lights, window controls only
Update trigger Touchscreen or BYD App
Scheduling Immediate or appointment-based

Wi-Fi vs Mobile Data: Which Is Better?

  • Mobile data: Works anywhere with coverage. Slower for large updates but requires no setup.
  • Wi-Fi (where available): Faster downloads. Best when parked at home near your router.
  • Key rule: A stable signal matters more than speed. An interrupted download causes failures.

How Long Do Updates Take?

Update duration varies based on the size of the software package and your connection speed. Based on owner reports and BYD's general guidance:

  • Minor updates (bug fixes, calibration): 10 to 30 minutes
  • Major system updates: 30 to 60 minutes
  • Full infotainment refresh: Up to 90 minutes in rare cases

During the entire process, the vehicle is essentially locked down. Only smart key locking/unlocking, interior lights, hazard warning lights, and window switches remain functional. Everything else is inoperable until the update completes.

What to Do If an Update Fails?

The BYD Atto 3 owner's manual provides a clear procedure for failed updates:

  1. Retry the update. Most failures are caused by temporary network interruptions. A second attempt often succeeds.
  2. Check your connection. Ensure the vehicle has a stable cellular or Wi-Fi signal before retrying.
  3. Verify battery level. A low SOC during the update can trigger a safety abort. Charge the vehicle and try again.
  4. Contact BYD. If the retry also fails, contact a BYD authorised dealer or service provider. They can perform the update manually via diagnostic tools.

Do not attempt to power cycle the vehicle or disconnect the 12V battery during a failed update. This can corrupt the software installation.

How to Check Your Installed Software Version?

To see which software version your Atto 3 is currently running:

  • Open the touchscreen and navigate to Settings > System > Version.
  • The current vehicle software version and infotainment version are displayed.
  • Compare this against BYD's latest published version (available through your dealer or BYD App) to confirm you are up to date.

What OTA Can Improve?

Common Mistakes Owners Make

  • Starting a drive during an update. The manual explicitly states: do not move the vehicle. Driving mid-update can corrupt the software.
  • Updating on low battery. The vehicle cannot charge during the update process. Start with a high SOC or full charge.
  • Leaving OBD devices plugged in. Third-party OBD dongles (for insurance trackers or performance monitors) can interfere with the update. Remove them before starting.
  • Ignoring the update prompt. Postponing updates indefinitely means missing bug fixes, security patches, and potential performance improvements.
  • Attempting a factory reset instead of an OTA retry. If an update fails, retry first. A factory reset (Settings > System > Version > Factory Reset) wipes your personal settings and should only be used as a last resort.

Questions Atto 3 Owners Ask

Can I opt out of automatic updates?

Yes. When an update notification appears, you can choose to schedule it for later rather than installing it immediately. The system does not force-install updates while you are driving.

Will OTA updates void my warranty?

No. Official BYD OTA updates are manufacturer-approved software. They do not affect your 6-year vehicle warranty or 8-year battery warranty.

Do updates change my regenerative braking settings?

Some updates may refine regen calibration, but your personal mode selection (Standard or High) is preserved across updates.

Can I roll back to a previous version?

Generally no. OTA updates are designed to move forward. If a specific update causes issues, contact your BYD dealer for assistance.
