BYD Dolphin Won't Charge: Every Cause and Fix
Share
When a BYD Dolphin will not charge, the cause is usually one of five things: the battery is already full and stopped automatically, reservation charging is waiting for its scheduled time, the battery is too hot or cold and the car is protecting it, the connection or equipment is at fault, or the 12V battery has over-discharged. The most-missed cause is the reservation trap, and the full diagnostic flow from the manual is below.
Charging Faults at a Glance
| Measurement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Most-missed cause | Reservation charging waiting for its set time |
| Biggest home-charging trap | Reservation on with a non-BYD charger can fail entirely |
| Temperature holds | Too hot or too cold pauses charging until normal |
| The hidden battery | An over-discharged 12V battery blocks charging |
| Auto-recovery case | Grid outages restart charging by themselves |
Start Here: The 60-Second Checks
Before assuming a fault, rule out the three situations where nothing is actually wrong.
- Is it simply full? The manual is plain: when the high-voltage battery is fully charged, charging stops automatically. A stopped session at 100 percent is a finished session
- Is a reservation waiting? If you plug in during a reservation's waiting period, the touchscreen reminds you that reservation charging is set, and the car sits patiently until its scheduled time. Tap the instant charging option if you want it to start now
- Is the car locked? The port door opens with the vehicle unlocked, and the connector seats and releases around the lock logic, so an unlocked car solves several mysteries at once
The Most-Missed Cause: The Reservation Charging Trap
The roadside favourite deserves its own section, because it catches owners in two ways.
- The waiting trap: With a reservation set, the car deliberately does not charge when plugged in, it waits for the scheduled window. The reminder appears on the touchscreen, and choosing instant charging overrides it for that session only. To stop all future waits, toggle reservation charging off under New Energy in the touchscreen
- The equipment trap: Here is the caution almost nobody reads: the manual states reservation charging is developed for BYD's slow AC charging equipment only, and with non-certified slow AC equipment it should be disabled. Left on, scheduled or even immediate charging may fail because the equipment does not respond, which the manual warns can run the battery to low SOC or worse
So if your Dolphin will not charge at home on a third-party wallbox or portable cable, check reservation charging first, and turn it off before testing anything else.
The Diagnostic Flow
- Read the cluster: A charging system fault message means stop the session, and the manual directs you to a BYD dealer. The connection indicator confirms whether the handshake even happened
- Consider temperature: Too hot or too cold, and the car protects the battery. Cold conditioning extends sessions, and an overheating warning stops them, so move to a moderate environment and retry when temperatures normalise
- Check the connection: A loose cable is a classic stops-midway cause, and if the charging connection switch was pressed, the session ends until you reconnect
- Test the equipment: If the charger's power indicator misbehaves, try different equipment or contact the supplier, and remember a grid outage resolves itself, charging restarts when power returns
- Suspect the 12V battery: The quiet culprit, an over-discharged low-voltage battery blocks charging entirely, and the manual's fix is replacement
- Escalate: Any persistent fault prompt on the vehicle or the pile belongs with a BYD authorised dealer
The Symptom, Cause, and Fix Table
| Measurement | Likely cause | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Will not start charging at all | Reservation waiting, locked car, or seating issue | Choose instant charging, unlock the vehicle, reseat the connector |
| Will not charge at home on a third-party charger | Reservation charging enabled with non-BYD equipment | Disable reservation charging in New Energy settings |
| Connected, starts, but will not charge | Battery full, extreme temperature, 12V over-discharged, or equipment fault | Nothing if full; wait for normal temperature; replace the 12V battery; swap equipment |
| Display fails during charging | Charging system fault | Stop the session and see a BYD dealer |
| Charging stops midway | Grid outage, loose cable, connection switch pressed, or overheat protection | Wait for power, secure the cable, reconnect, or let the battery cool |
| Connector stuck after charging | Port lock engaged | Unlock and pull within 30 seconds, double-press after DC, emergency latch if needed |
Home Charging: Getting the Basics Right
Since "will not charge at home" is the most common version of this problem, the manual's home-side rules matter.
- A proper socket: The Mode 2 cable needs a household socket meeting local standards, and flimsy circuits trip under sustained load
- No casual adapters: The manual advises against extra wires and adapters, and where one is unavoidable, it must use a suitable cable of at least 1.5 square millimetres with compliant ratings
- Inspect before every session: Cracked housings, worn cables, rusted plugs, or foreign material in the port mean do not charge
- Quality kit pays: A certified portable charger for your Dolphin with healthy cabling removes the equipment variable from every diagnosis
