BYD Atto 3 Wireless Charging Pad: Tips for Maximum Speed and Safety
Share
The BYD Atto 3 has a built-in Qi-certified wireless phone charger located at the front of the centre console cubby box. It works with any Qi-certified smartphone placed screen-up on the non-slip rubber pad. Charging may stop automatically at high temperatures and will resume once the pad cools down. Only one phone can charge at a time, and thick phone cases can block the charging signal.
Wireless Charging Pad Location
The wireless charger sits in the front section of the centre console cubby, just ahead of the gear selector area. It is marked with a charging symbol on the rubber pad surface. When the ignition is on, simply place your phone screen-up on the pad and charging begins automatically.
A charging icon appears on the infotainment touchscreen to confirm the connection. To enable or disable the charger, swipe down the shortcut menu on the touchscreen and tap the wireless charger icon.
Supported Qi Standard and Wattage
| Measurement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Charging standard | Qi-certified |
| Max wireless output | Up to 15W (varies by phone model) |
| Phones supported | Any Qi-certified smartphone |
| Simultaneous charging | One phone only |
| Activation | Automatic when phone placed on pad |
| Toggle on/off | Shortcut menu > wireless charger icon |
| Non-Qi phones | Not guaranteed for normal charging |
The owner's manual notes that the in-vehicle wireless charging module may be slower than the original charger provided by your phone manufacturer. This is normal and relates to compatibility tuning between the car's Qi transmitter and various phone receivers.
Which Phone Cases Block Wireless Charging?
The BYD Atto 3 manual explicitly warns that a phone case that is too thick may prevent charging. In practice, the following case types cause problems:
- Cases thicker than 3mm: Signal cannot reach the phone's Qi coil reliably
- Metal-backed cases or ring holders: Metal blocks electromagnetic induction entirely
- Wallet cases with card slots: Metal chip cards (bank cards, NFC key cards) between the case and phone can overheat and get damaged during charging
- Battery pack cases: Built-in battery interferes with the Qi signal
- Rugged cases with thick rubber layers: Distance between coils becomes too great
Thin silicone, TPU, and standard plastic cases under 3mm generally work without issue.
Why Wireless Charging Slows or Stops in Heat?
The Atto 3 owner's manual confirms: "Charging may stop at high temperatures, and will resume once the temperature drops." This is a built-in safety feature, not a fault.
Wireless charging generates heat in both the pad and the phone. In summer, when cabin temperatures can exceed 40°C before the A/C kicks in, the combined heat pushes the system past its thermal safety threshold. The charger pauses until temperatures normalise. For broader heat management context, see our Atto 3 battery temperature protection guide.
To reduce heat-related charging interruptions:
- Pre-cool the cabin with A/C via the BYD App before entering
- Avoid placing the phone in direct sunlight on the pad
- Remove thick cases that trap heat against the phone
- Use wired USB charging during extreme heat days
Wired vs Wireless: When to Use Each
| Measurement | Wireless Pad | USB-C / USB-A Port |
|---|---|---|
| Max speed | Up to 15W | Up to 60W (USB-C fast charge) |
| Best for | Topping up, short drives | Rapid charging, long drives |
| Cable needed | No | Yes |
| Heat generation | Higher (less efficient) | Lower (direct transfer) |
| Data transfer | No | Yes (USB data port) |
| CarPlay / Android Auto | Wireless only | Wired or wireless |
| Summer reliability | May pause in extreme heat | Consistent |
Use the wireless pad for convenience on short trips. Switch to the USB-C port when you need to recover battery quickly or during hot weather. The Atto 3 has front USB-C and USB-A ports plus rear USB ports for passengers. For full details on all charging and port types, see our Atto 3 OTA and connectivity guide.

Phone Overheating on the Pad: Prevention
- Remove your case. Even thin cases trap heat. Bare charging runs cooler.
- Close background apps. Navigation plus charging plus streaming generates significant heat.
- Turn on cabin A/C. Lower ambient temperature helps both pad and phone.
- Avoid charging above 80%. Phones generate more heat in the final 20%.
- Switch to wired. USB-C is cooler and faster when the phone needs power urgently.
Troubleshooting: Phone Not Charging Wirelessly
If your phone is not charging on the Atto 3 wireless pad, work through this checklist from the owner's manual:
- Check Qi certification. Non-Qi phones will not charge. Verify your phone model supports Qi wireless charging.
- Centre the phone. The centre of the phone coil must align with the centre of the wireless charger, indicated by text on the charging area.
- Remove metal objects. Coins, keys, rings, or any metal item on the pad alongside the phone will block or disrupt charging.
- Check your case. Remove thick or metal-backed cases and retry.
- Remove bank cards. Cards with chips between the case and phone can interfere and overheat.
- Check for moisture. Any fluid on the pad surface causes malfunction. Dry the area completely.
- Wait for cooldown. If the pad is hot from sun exposure or previous use, wait for it to cool before retrying.
- Keep smart key away. The manual warns to keep your smart key more than 25 cm from the wireless charger area during use.
- Verify the charger is enabled. Check the shortcut menu on the touchscreen to confirm the wireless charger icon is active.
- Contact BYD. If none of the above resolves the issue, visit a BYD authorized dealer or service provider.
Safety Warnings from the Manual
- No metal objects (coins, keys, rings) on the pad with the phone
- No heavy objects on the charging area
- No unattended phone left charging in a locked vehicle
- Do not check charging status while driving
- Do not touch hot metal items found between phone and pad with bare hands
- On bumpy roads, charging may intermittently stop and resume (normal behaviour)
The Atto 3 also reminds you to take your phone when leaving. After power-off, if the phone is still charging and the driver's door opens, a "Please take your cell phone" alarm sounds for five seconds.
Common Mistakes Owners Make
- Leaving the smart key on the pad. Interferes with charging. Keep it 25+ cm away.
- Stacking two phones. Only one can charge. The second blocks both.
- Phone face-down. The manual specifies screen-up for correct coil alignment.
- Ignoring the "take your phone" alarm. A phone left in a hot locked car can overheat.
- Blaming the car for slow charging. 10-15W wireless is normal. Use USB-C for faster speeds.
