BYD Atto 2 Drivetrain Changes: What the RWD Switch Means for Owners

The Atto 2 sold in Australia today is front-wheel drive, confirmed by its owner's handbook. Spy photos and Chinese homologation reports from June 2026 show an updated model switching to a rear motor, multi-link rear suspension and a rear-mounted charge port. None of it is confirmed for Australia yet, and nothing about the update changes the car in your driveway.

What is changing and when

In late June 2026, camouflaged pre-production cars were photographed in China and matched against government homologation filings, first reported by CarNewsChina and picked up by CarsGuide and CarExpert. The updated Atto 2, sold in China as the Yuan UP, reportedly moves to a rear motor, gains multi-link rear suspension, relocates the charge port to the rear, and offers optional LiDAR-based DiPilot 300 driver assistance.

Three honesty flags before going further:

  • Nothing is confirmed for Australia. These are Chinese-market filings and spy photos; BYD has announced no export timing or specification.
  • Chinese motor outputs are lower on paper. Reports list 100 kW and 120 kW rear motors, below the current Australian car's peak. Exports of other BYD models have historically received higher outputs, so treat those figures as domestic-market only.
  • This is separate from the Atto 2 PHEV, which is reported to reach Australia in the third quarter of 2026. Different car, different story.

FWD versus RWD in plain terms

Your current Atto 2's handbook documents a permanent magnet synchronous motor driving the front wheels, with peak outputs of 130 kW, 100 kW or 70 kW depending on configuration, a 160 km/h maximum design speed, and 17.0 kWh/100 km WLTP consumption.

Moving the motor to the rear changes three everyday things: traction under acceleration shifts to the wheels being pressed into the road, steering no longer also delivers power, and weight moves rearward. It is the same philosophy behind the Atto 3 Evo, and a genuine engineering upgrade. It is not a reason to think less of the current car, whose front-drive layout is shared with most of its class.

Suspension and body dimension changes

The reported suspension change is consistent across sources: MacPherson struts stay up front, and the rear moves from a torsion beam to a multi-link arrangement, which typically improves ride comfort and rear-seat isolation on rough surfaces.

The body dimensions are where the sources openly disagree, so we will not pick a number for you:

  • CarsGuide, citing Chinese government filings, reports the wheelbase growing 150 mm to 2,770 mm, length up 355 mm to 4,665 mm and width up 65 mm to 1,895 mm.
  • CarExpert reports 4,335 mm long, 1,830 mm wide on an unchanged 2,620 mm wheelbase, calling everything except a 25 mm length increase unchanged.

Those two descriptions cannot both be true of the same vehicle. The discrepancy may reflect different filings or a second, larger model in the pipeline. Until BYD publishes official figures, treat every dimension for the updated car as provisional.

Charge port relocation and why it matters

The one change visible from the street is the charge port moving from the front of the car to the rear quarter panel, where a fuel door traditionally sits. Reports attribute the move to owner feedback: drivers who reverse into parking bays found the nose-mounted port awkward at many chargers.

For current owners this cuts two ways. Your front-port car is unaffected and charges exactly as its handbook describes. But port-specific accessories will not be interchangeable between generations: a cover shaped for the front location will not transplant to a rear-quarter door, and cable reach at home changes when the port does. Does this affect current-owner accessories?

Almost entirely no. Floor mats, boot liners, seat covers, screen protectors and interior trim are unaffected by which axle is driven. The realistic watch-list if the update reaches Australia:

  • Charge port covers: new location, new shape, generation-specific.
  • Rear underbody items: mud flaps and protective panels near the rear axle may change with the new packaging.
  • Anything dimension-dependent: if the larger reported body size proves true, exterior covers become generation-specific too.

What current owners should actually do

Nothing defensive. Updates at this pace are simply how BYD operates, and the current car's specification, warranty and parts support are unchanged by what China homologates next.
