BYD Atto 3 charging guide showing Type 2 AC charging, CCS2 DC fast charging, home wallbox charging, and public EV charging compatibility

Which Charger Works with BYD Atto 3? Complete Charging Guide

The BYD Atto 3 uses a Type 2 connector for AC charging (up to 11 kW) and a CCS2 connector for DC fast charging (up to 88 kW). Every Atto 3 ships with a Mode 2 charging cable that plugs into a standard household socket for ~2.3 kW charging. It works with all public Type 2 AC chargers and all CCS2 DC fast chargers across Australia, the UK, Europe, and the Middle East. The built-in wireless phone charging pad supports Qi-certified phones at up to 15W.

Every Charger That Works with the Atto 3

Measurement Connector Max Speed Full Charge Time (60.48 kWh)
Household socket (Mode 2) Type 2 (included cable) ~2.3 kW ~26-28 hours
Home wallbox (single phase) Type 2 7 kW ~9 hours
Home wallbox (three phase) Type 2 11 kW ~6 hours
Public AC charger Type 2 11 kW (vehicle limit) ~6 hours
Public DC fast charger CCS2 88 kW (vehicle limit) 10-80% in ~45 min
Tesla Supercharger (open sites) CCS2 88 kW (vehicle limit) 10-80% in ~45 min
Wireless phone pad (in-car) Qi standard Up to 15W Phone only, not vehicle

Charging speeds are capped by the vehicle, not the charger. Plugging into a 350 kW ultra-rapid charger still delivers a maximum of 88 kW to the Atto 3.

What Comes in the Box: Mode 2 Cable

The Atto 3 owner's manual describes the included Mode 2 charging cable as four components: a power plug complying with local standards, a charging connector (Type 2), a control box, and a charging cable. The plug connects to a standard household power socket and the connector to the vehicle's charge port.

  • Cable length: Approximately 5 metres (region dependent)
  • Charging speed: ~2.3 kW from a standard 10A household socket
  • Range added overnight (8 hours): Roughly 80-100 km
  • Max operating temperature: 50°C. Store in a cool, dry place.

The manual specifies: "Use a dedicated AC line and power outlet that meets local standards." Avoid power strips and extension leads. If an adapter is unavoidable, cable diameter must be at least 1.5 mm².

Home Wallbox: The Upgrade Worth Making

A dedicated wallbox transforms Atto 3 ownership. The difference between Mode 2 and a 7 kW wallbox is dramatic:

  • Mode 2 overnight (8 hours): Adds ~80-100 km of range
  • 7 kW wallbox overnight: Full charge from near-empty, ~420 km available every morning
  • 11 kW wallbox: Full charge in ~6 hours (requires three-phase power)
  • Typical installed price: A$1,500-A$3,500 depending on brand and switchboard distance

Any Type 2 wallbox brand works: Tesla Wall Connector (Gen 3), Zappi, Wallbox Pulsar, Fronius Wattpilot, EVSE Australia units, and dozens more. The Atto 3 needs no brand-specific charger.

Public Charging: AC and DC

AC Public Chargers (Type 2)

Shopping centres, council car parks, and hotels typically offer 7-22 kW AC chargers. The Atto 3 draws a maximum of 11 kW from these. Bring your own Type 2 to Type 2 cable, as many AC posts are socket-only (BYO cable).

DC Fast Chargers (CCS2)

Highway charging stops use CCS2 DC fast chargers with tethered cables. The Atto 3 charges at up to 88 kW, completing 10-80% in approximately 45 minutes.

  • Compatible networks (AU): Chargefox, Evie, BP Pulse, Ampol AmpCharge, NRMA, Tesla Superchargers (open sites)
  • DC unlock tip from the manual: Press the unlock button twice within three seconds to release the connector after DC charging
  • Charging curve: Fastest between 10-60% SOC, tapering above 80%

Charging Settings on the Touchscreen

The manual confirms two useful AC charging settings:

  • Scheduled charging: Settings > Energy > Charge/Discharge > Smart Charging. Set start and end times to use off-peak electricity rates.
  • AC current limit: Settings > Energy > Charge/Discharge > AC Charging Current Limit. Reduce the draw if your home circuit is shared.
  • A/C while charging: The vehicle can run climate control while plugged in, but the manual recommends turning it off to maximise charging power.

Wireless Phone Charging Inside the Atto 3

Separate from vehicle charging, the Atto 3 includes a Qi wireless phone charging pad in the centre console. The manual confirms it works with Qi-certified phones only, one phone at a time, placed screen-up on the non-slip rubber pad.

  • Output: Up to 15W (phone dependent)
  • Case limit: Thick cases may prevent charging
  • Smart key warning: Keep the key 25+ cm from the pad during use
  • Heat behaviour: Charging pauses at high temperature and resumes after cooling

Charging in Hot Climates

The Atto 3's LFP Blade Battery handles heat well, but the manual recommends parking in a ventilated area during charging and notes that battery temperatures that are too high compromise charging performance. In summer:

  • Charge in shade or undercover where possible
  • Charge soon after driving while thermal management is active
  • Turn A/C off during charging for maximum charging power

Common Mistakes Atto 3 Owners Make

  • Using extension leads with the Mode 2 cable. The manual warns against additional wires or adapters. If unavoidable, cable diameter must be at least 1.5 mm².
  • Expecting 350 kW charging speeds. The Atto 3 caps at 88 kW DC regardless of charger capability. Plugging into an ultra-rapid charger does not charge faster.
  • Forgetting a Type 2 cable for public AC posts. Many AC chargers are socket-only. Keep a Type 2 to Type 2 cable in the boot. A cable organiser and wall mount keeps both cables tidy.
  • Forcing the DC connector out. Press unlock twice within three seconds first. Forcing a locked connector damages the charge port.
  • Coiling the cable during charging. The manual warns coiled cables trap heat. Lay the cable out flat while charging.
  • Repeatedly opening and closing the charge port door. The manual specifically warns this can cause port door failure.
