BYD Sealion 7 warranty Australia handover with warranty documents

BYD Warranty Australia: The Complete Guide, Verified Line by Line

Every BYD sold in Australia carries a six year, 150,000 km vehicle warranty and an eight year, 160,000 km battery and drive unit warranty with a 70 per cent capacity guarantee, backdated to August 2022. Every figure below is verified against BYD's own documents.

Online sources show three different sets of numbers because the terms changed in April 2025, then again in Europe in January 2026. Everything below is checked against the printed BYD Warranty Book and the current Australian handbook, the standard every bydaccessories.store article is held to.

1. What the Warranty Covers and When the Clock Starts

The warranty covers defects in material quality or manufacturing workmanship. Any authorised BYD service provider will diagnose and repair a qualifying defect free of charge, and parts they replace become BYD property.

A useful detail from the book: a part fitted under a warranty repair stays covered until the end of the whole vehicle warranty. Ask for the repair record after every visit.

The clock starts when the purchase invoice is issued, not when you collect the car, so a long wait quietly eats into your cover. That makes current BYD delivery times in Australia worth understanding. Every term runs to years or kilometres, whichever arrives first.

2. The Battery and Drive Unit Terms Explained

The Blade traction battery is warranted for eight years or 160,000 km with a 70 per cent state of health guarantee. If usable capacity falls below that line within the period, BYD must repair, replace or otherwise rectify the pack.

BYD may repair or fit a new, reconditioned or remanufactured unit, and a replacement battery must hold at least the capacity yours had before the failure, judged against age and mileage. For the chemistry behind those numbers, it helps to know how the Blade battery actually works.

The drive unit means the drive motor and its controller hardware. One figure conflicts between documents: the June 2023 printed book lists it at eight years or 150,000 km, while the current Australian handbook confirms 160,000 km. We follow the Australian handbook and suggest confirming with your dealer if your paperwork predates the update.

On the plug-in hybrids, the petrol engine is not part of the drive unit definition. It sits under the six year vehicle warranty instead.

3. Model by Model: The Terms Are Identical

Owners search these terms per model, so here is the table. The answer never changes.

Models Vehicle warranty Battery and drive unit
Electric: Atto 1, Atto 2, Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal, Sealion 7 6 years or 150,000 km 8 years or 160,000 km
Plug-in hybrid: Seal 6 DM-i, Sealion 6, Sealion 8, Shark 6 ute 6 years or 150,000 km 8 years or 160,000 km

The terms apply to vehicles sold new in Australia. The book ties service to the market that issued the cover, so private imports sit outside it.

4. Why Older Articles Show Different Numbers

Until April 2025, BYD's Australian warranty was fragmented. Items such as the infotainment touchscreen and shock absorbers carried three year, 60,000 km terms, while lights, suspension components and ball joints ran four years or 100,000 km.

BYD then unified everything into the structure above, lifted the drive unit cap by 10,000 km to match the battery, and backdated the terms to the first deliveries in August 2022. Existing owners were upgraded automatically, though nobody was compensated for excluded repairs already paid for.

And the 250,000 km headlines? That is a January 2026 European battery update only. Australia's cap remains 160,000 km at the time of writing.

5. What Is Not Covered

  • Wear and tear items. Tyres, non-LED bulbs, trim discolouration and stone chips are excluded, the 12V lead acid battery carries only a 12 month term, and body rattles become chargeable after 12 months or 20,000 km.
  • Accident, misuse and racing damage. Collision, burning, freezing, overloading and competition use all fall outside the warranty.
  • Modifications and non-genuine parts. Both void coverage for any resulting damage or failure.
  • Environmental and chemical corrosion. Acid rain, hail, floods, tree sap, stones and improper chemicals are excluded. Corrosion from a manufacturing defect is assessed under the standard coverage instead.
  • Skipped or improper servicing. Damage traced to missed logbook services or wrong fluids is excluded, so plan for what BYD servicing actually costs in Australia and keep to the schedule.
  • Normal battery fade within the 70 per cent guarantee, plus battery damage from collision or water immersion.
  • Voiding triggers. VIN or odometer tampering, written-off vehicles, ignored recalls, exceeded load limits and declined software updates can all invalidate the warranty.

6. Transfers, Claims and Independent Servicing

The warranty attaches to the vehicle, not the first owner. The remaining balance passes to the next owner, with the clock still running from the original invoice date, useful when buying or selling used.

Claims go through any authorised BYD service provider nationwide. Bring service records, and note only authorised providers can lodge spare parts claims on your behalf.

BYD does not force servicing through its own network. Under Australian Consumer Law, a qualified independent workshop servicing the car to the logbook does not by itself void the warranty, though damage from improper work is excluded, so keep invoices. The consumer guarantees also sit above the written warranty, and a major failure can entitle you to remedies beyond these caps.

Since 22 July 2025, every new BYD also includes 12 months of complimentary roadside assistance through Australian Motoring Services, renewable annually. The assistance line is 1800 270 711.

BYD Warranty Australia 6 Years 150,000 km and Battery 8 Years 160,000 km

Common Mistakes BYD Owners Make

  • Reading the 250,000 km European headline as an Australian term. The Australian battery cap is 160,000 km as of publication.
  • Letting the 12 month or 20,000 km service window lapse, then discovering related damage is excluded.
  • Dismissing update notifications and recall letters, both listed among the voiding triggers.
  • Expecting wear items such as the 12V battery, tyres or standard bulbs to be covered under the six year term.
  • Counting cover from the delivery date. The clock starts when the purchase invoice is issued.
