Both programmes score cars across four categories: adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, vulnerable road user protection, and safety assist. Each is expressed as a percentage, and a car needs strong results in all four to earn five stars.
Two things matter when reading these numbers. First, protocols tighten every few years, so a score from an older test is not directly comparable to a recent one. Second, ANCAP and Euro NCAP sometimes publish different figures for the same car, because the vehicles and test batches differ.
The Atto 3 shows this clearly. Euro NCAP awarded it 89 percent for child occupants and 74 percent for safety assist, while ANCAP gave the same model 84 percent and 80 percent respectively. Neither is wrong. They are different tests. Full reports for both are published by ANCAP and Euro NCAP.
BYD Seal Safety Rating Breakdown
The Seal earned five stars from both programmes. ANCAP recorded 89 percent adult, 87 percent child, 82 percent pedestrian, and 75 percent safety assist.
Testers gave it full marks for protecting the driver in the oblique pole test, and maximum points for child passengers in the side impact. Its cell-to-body construction contributes torsional rigidity of around 40,500 Nm per degree, which is supercar territory and shows in the frontal offset result.
Tesla Model 3 Safety Rating Breakdown
The current Model 3 scored 90 percent adult, 93 percent child, 89 percent pedestrian, and 87 percent safety assist under Euro NCAP's latest protocol. It was named Best in Class for large family cars.
Its standout feature is the active hood, which lifts during a collision to reduce injury to pedestrians, plus an upgraded emergency braking algorithm that now detects motorcycles.
BYD Atto 3 vs Tesla Model Y Safety
Both are five-star cars, and both score 91 percent for adult occupant protection. The gap opens elsewhere.
- Safety assist: Model Y 92 percent, Atto 3 80 percent under ANCAP
- Pedestrian protection: Model Y 86 percent, Atto 3 69 percent
- Child occupant: Model Y 93 percent, Atto 3 84 percent under ANCAP
The Model Y recorded the highest overall weighted safety score of any vehicle ANCAP assessed in its most recent testing cycle. The Atto 3's crash structure holds up, but its pedestrian and assistance scores reflect an older test protocol and a less sophisticated driver-assistance suite.
BYD Sealion 7 Safety Score
The Sealion 7 is BYD's strongest recent result: 87 percent adult, 93 percent child, 76 percent pedestrian, and 79 percent safety assist.
That 93 percent child score equals the highest in the category over the past nine years. Euro NCAP did flag one weakness, rating rear passenger chest protection as weak in the full-width barrier test, which is worth knowing if you regularly carry adults in the back.
Passive Safety: Airbags, Structure and the Blade Battery
On paper, the two brands take similar approaches to structure but arrive from different directions.

BYD fits its full suite as standard on every car: autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise, blind-spot detection, and rear cross-traffic braking. Nothing sits behind a paywall.
Tesla includes basic Autopilot as standard but charges for Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving. Its Safety Assist scores, 87 and 92 percent, are achieved on standard equipment, which is what Euro NCAP tests.

In pure structural terms, the two are closely matched. BYD's adult occupant scores of 87 to 91 percent sit alongside Tesla's 90 to 91 percent. Where Tesla pulls ahead is in pedestrian protection and safety assist, both of which reward sophisticated software.
For families, BYD's child occupant results are the equal of Tesla's, and its Blade Battery offers a real thermal safety advantage. Both brands build genuinely safe cars.
