Tesla's headline capability sits behind a significant paywall. Full Self-Driving Supervised costs around $10,100 in Australia, or a monthly subscription.

  • What it adds: Automatic lane changes, navigating interchanges, stopping at traffic lights and signs, and city-street driving in supported regions
  • The catch: It remains Level 2 and requires supervision, and its rollout varies by market
  • The liability: When FSD is engaged and something goes wrong, Tesla's position is that the driver was responsible

That last point became costly when a US jury issued a large judgment over a fatal Autopilot crash, assigning Tesla part of the blame.

BYD DiPilot: Standard ADAS Package

BYD's DiPilot, marketed as God's Eye in China, is included as standard on most models, even affordable ones. Its suite is comprehensive.

This is the deepest philosophical split between the two brands.

Tesla's FSD can navigate city streets in supported regions, though availability outside North America is limited. BYD's higher DiPilot tiers offer city navigation in China, and BYD reports its God's Eye C averaging over 1,000 km between human interventions.

Independent assessments are more measured. Some rank BYD's system behind the leading Chinese rivals in outright city performance, so the raw sensor count does not automatically translate to the smoothest experience. Real-world capability depends heavily on region and software version.

Parking Assist: Summon vs Smart Park

Both brands automate parking, and both do it well.

  • Tesla: Autopark plus Summon, which can move the car into or out of a space remotely on FSD
  • BYD: Remote self-parking, with even the entry God's Eye tier able to valet park without a driver aboard

BYD offering automated parking on its cheapest tier is notable, since Tesla ties its most advanced parking to paid FSD.

Regulatory Status by Region

Rules shape what these systems can legally do, and they differ sharply.

In Australia and Europe, hands-on Level 2 is permitted, but the driver is always legally responsible. Euro NCAP separately grades assisted driving, and it rated the Atto 3's adaptive cruise poorly and did not recommend it, a fair caution for buyers to note. Tesla's FSD faces its own regulatory limits, and its city features are not fully available in many markets, including Australia, in the same form as North America.

Which System Is Better Today?

It depends what you value.

Tesla wins on software maturity. Its systems are the most polished and proven, with the largest real-world dataset and the smoothest handling of unusual situations.

BYD wins on value and hardware. It gives you more sensors, including LiDAR, standard or far cheaper, and it has broken new ground by accepting liability for crashes on its system, a genuine vote of confidence Tesla has not matched.

For polish today, Tesla leads. For sensor redundancy, value, and accountability, BYD makes a compelling and rapidly improving case. Both remain Level 2 systems that require your full attention.
