BYD Shark 6 Pickup Bed Guide: Load Limits, Lights & Safe Use
Share
The BYD Shark 6 pickup bed is built for tradie, camping, and worksite use. Load goods evenly with heaviest items at the bottom and as far forward as possible, secure all cargo with ropes or straps, and never carry passengers in the bed. The bed has its own light switch (infotainment screen or button on the left wall) and a dedicated V2L power socket. The tailgate has four opening methods plus an emergency inside unlock. All loading principles and safety warnings come directly from the BYD Shark 6 Owner's Manual.

BYD Shark 6 Pickup Bed Dimensions (L × W × H)
The Shark 6 pickup bed handles typical mid-size ute loads: tools, building materials, camping kit, or appliances laid flat. Published bed dimensions are approximately 1,520 mm long, 1,200 mm wide between wheel arches, and 470 mm deep.
For larger items, drop the tailgate to extend load length. The manual requires that the length and width of goods do not exceed the pickup bed, with height kept as low as possible.
Maximum Payload Capacity from the Owner's Manual
BYD publishes a payload of approximately 790 kg for the Shark 6, with the exact figure printed on the vehicle nameplate. The manual rule: keep the vehicle's total load (vehicle + passengers + luggage) within the specified maximum weight.
Payload is shared between cabin and bed. Five adults in the cab reduces what the tray can carry. Work backwards from GVM, subtract kerb weight plus passengers, and the remainder is what the bed can hold.
How to Evenly Distribute Load in the Bed?
Three core loading principles from the manual:
- Place luggage evenly in the pickup bed
- Put heavier items at the bottom and as far forward as possible
- Secure goods with ropes or straps so they will not move while driving
Why it matters: "Load the goods evenly to avoid movement and partial overload of the vehicle, or even damage to the pickup bed and the frame." A rear-heavy or one-side-heavy load shifts weight to the rear axle and compromises handling and braking.
A robust storage box keeps tools from rolling around. Our BYD Shark 6 rear container storage tool box is sized for the Shark 6 tray.
Bed Lighting: The Pickup Bed Light Switch
The Shark 6 has a factory-fitted bed light, controlled two ways. Both require the vehicle in P (Park):
- Interior switch: Slide down the top status bar on the infotainment screen, then tap the bed light icon on the shortcut page.
- Exterior switch: Press the button on the left wall of the pickup bed.
The factory light covers general loading. For brighter worksite or campsite coverage, our BYD Shark 6 tail box LED lighting kit with switch adds dedicated bright work lighting for the bed.
V2L Power Sockets in the Pickup Bed
The Shark 6 has a single-phase discharging socket built into the bed. With ignition on, it supplies up to about 2.2 kW per socket, suitable for power tools, lighting, fridges, and laptops.
Manual requirements:
- Ignition must be switched on
- Socket surface clean, undamaged, not rusted, connection firm
- Wipe dry if damp before plugging in
- Never use during a thunderstorm or while washing the vehicle

How to Operate the Tailgate Safely?
The Shark 6 tailgate opens four ways:
- Smart key: Double-press the tailgate opening button.
- Exterior microswitch: Press the microswitch on the tailgate twice within one second.
- Infotainment screen: Slide down the top status bar and tap the tailgate icon.
- Interior pickup bed switch: Press from inside the bed.
Manual safety reminders:
- Be mindful of windy conditions; tailgate may move suddenly in strong wind
- Before loading or unloading, make sure tailgate is fully open and secure
- Keep hands and fingers clear when closing
- Do not allow children to open or close the tailgate
- An emergency unlock device is under the cover plate of the tailgate, for opening from inside
To prevent dust and water entering the tray, fit a quality seal kit. Our BYD Shark 6 tailgate seal kit is sized for the Shark 6 tailgate gaps.
Securing Cargo: Tie-Down Points & Best Practice
The Shark 6 bed has anchor points designed for securing goods. Use ratchet straps or quality ropes through these points.
- Heaviest items hard against the front bulkhead, low and centred
- Tie down from at least two corners diagonally
- Use corner protectors on sharp-edged loads
- Check strap tension after the first 5 to 10 km
- Re-check after rough roads or worksite tracks
Driving Tips with a Fully Loaded Bed
A loaded bed changes how the Shark 6 handles. The manual warns that "overloading or improper accommodation may affect maneuverability, stability and normal operation of the vehicle."
- Decelerate earlier and brake gently
- Increase following distance
- Take corners at lower speed
- Check tyre pressures (around 2.5 bar) before a long loaded trip
- For a fully loaded bed (evenly distributed), set headlight lighting level to 1 to 3
With the tailgate down and a fitted bed shelter, the bed also becomes a camping space. Our BYD Shark 6 rear tub camping tent (double-layer) turns the bed into a weather-tight sleeping area in minutes.
Items to Never Place in the Pickup Bed
The manual is explicit:
- Passengers. No one rides in the pickup bed during driving.
- Flammable or explosive materials such as fuel containers and spray cans
- Unextinguished cigarettes or matches (wind blows them into the bed)
- Unsecured loose items that can become projectiles in a hard stop
- Items longer or wider than the bed without proper extension and flag marking
- Damp electronics directly on the bed floor without protection
Common mistakes Shark 6 owners make with the pickup bed
- Loading rear-heavy. Shifts weight off the front axle.
- Not securing cargo. Loose items damage the liner and fly out at speed.
- Operating the tailgate in strong wind. Can move suddenly.
- Letting kids open the tailgate. Manual warns against this.
- Using the bed socket in rain. Serious electric shock risk.
- Forgetting headlight level adjustment. Causes glare for oncoming drivers.
The Shark 6 pickup bed is the workhorse end of the vehicle. Load evenly, secure every item, never carry passengers, and respect the GVM on your nameplate. For more, see our BYD Shark 6 OTA updates guide, or browse our full range of BYD Shark 6 accessories at bydaccessories.store.
