BYD Shark 6 Child Seat Safety: ISOFIX Installation Guide

The BYD Shark 6 has ISOFIX anchorages on the two rear outboard seats only (rear left and rear right). The rear centre seat and the front passenger seat are not suitable for child restraints. The manual is explicit: never install a rear-facing child restraint on the front passenger seat. Lower anchors sit in the gap between the seat cushion and seatback, and top tether anchorages are on the rear bulkhead behind the rear seat. Always secure the top tether when fitting a child seat.

ISOFIX Anchor Points: Exact Locations in the Shark 6

The Shark 6 is equipped with ISOFIX anchorages on the rear outboard seats. A label on the seat indicates the anchoring position.

• Lower anchors: Located in the gap between the seat cushion and the seatback on each rear outboard seat
• Top tether anchorages: Located on the rear bulkhead, behind the rear seat
• Label: Each anchoring position is marked on the seat for easy identification

The manual stresses securing the top tether every time you install a child restraint that has one.

Which Seats Have ISOFIX?

This is the most important point to get right. The Shark 6 provides ISOFIX on the rear outboard seats only.

• Rear left seat: ISOFIX equipped
• Rear right seat: ISOFIX equipped
• Rear centre seat: Not suitable for child restraints, do not fit a seat here
• Front passenger seat: Not suitable for child restraints, and never for a rear-facing seat

Note that this differs from some other BYD models. The Atto 3, for example, offers a front passenger ISOFIX position with an airbag switch. Group 0, I, II, III Seats: What Is Compatible

The rear outboard ISOFIX positions are approved for a range of child restraint size classes, which map to the familiar weight groups:

• Group 0 and 0+ (up to 13 kg), rear-facing: Size classes R1, R2X, R2, R3
• Group I (9 to 18 kg): Rear-facing R-classes, or forward-facing F2X, F2, F3
• Group II and III (15 to 36 kg), forward-facing: Booster classes B2, B3

Always check the fitting list supplied with your specific child seat to confirm it is approved for the Shark 6 and the size class. When in doubt, have the seat checked by an accredited fitter.

Top Tether Routing in the Shark 6 Cab

Correct top tether routing is essential for the seat to perform in a crash. The manual sets out the process:

• Route the strap correctly: Where a top tether is used on a rear outboard seat, route it at the outside of each head support post
• Through the head support: Where applicable, route the strap through the hole in the head support before attaching and tensioning
• Anchor it: Lift the head support, fold the seatback forward at an angle, engage the hook tightly to the anchorage on the rear bulkhead, then lock the seatback and tighten the tether
• Tension firmly: Ensure the strap is secure with no slack

Rear-Facing Installation Best Practice

Rear-facing seats are fitted on the rear outboard positions only. To install one correctly:

• Make room: If there is no front passenger, the front seat can be moved forward to create space for the rear-facing seat
• Adjust the head support: The rear head support can be raised or removed so the seatback safely supports the child restraint
• Check contact: Ensure the child seat sits firmly against the vehicle seatback
• Secure everything: Lock in the lower anchors and tension the top tether

The Front Passenger Airbag and Child Seats

This is where Shark 6 owners must be especially careful. The manual states clearly: never install a rear-facing child restraint on the front passenger seat.

Unlike some BYD models that include a passenger airbag switch to allow a front-seat child restraint, the Shark 6 manual does not approve child restraints on the front passenger seat at all. The reason is safety: a rear-facing seat places the child's head close to the airbag, and a deploying airbag can cause fatal injury.

The safe rule for the Shark 6 is simple: all child seats go in the rear outboard positions, never the front.

The Rock Test: Checking the Seat Is Secure

Once installed, always confirm the seat is firmly fixed. The manual describes the check:

• Push and pull: Push and pull the child restraint in different directions to confirm it is securely installed
• Check for obstructions: Make sure no foreign objects are around the anchoring device
• Check the belt: Ensure the seat belt is not stuck behind the child restraint
• Minimal movement: A correctly fitted seat should move very little at the belt path

If the seat shifts noticeably, remove it and reinstall, checking the anchors and tether.

Child Presence Detection (CPD): How It Works in the Shark 6

The Shark 6 includes Child Presence Detection, which monitors the cabin after the vehicle is powered off and locked. If it detects an occupant left inside, it flashes the lights and sounds the horn. If the alarm escalates, the air conditioning switches on automatically to protect the occupant.

• Set it up: Touchscreen, then Vehicle, then Cabin Perception, with options OFF, ON, Standard, and Delay
• Cancel an alarm: Unlock or open any door with the key

Common Mistakes Shark 6 Owners Make

• Trying to fit a child seat on the front passenger seat. The Shark 6 does not approve this. Use the rear outboard seats.
• Using the rear centre seat. It is not suitable for child restraints. Stick to the outboard positions.
• Assuming it works like the Atto 3. The Atto 3 has front passenger ISOFIX, the Shark 6 does not.
• Skipping the top tether. Always secure and tension it where the seat has one.
• Not doing the rock test. Always push and pull to confirm the seat is firmly fixed before every trip.
• Turning off CPD. Leave Child Presence Detection enabled for hot-weather protection.
