BYD Service Cost in the UAE: AFEMC Pricing, Schedules & Warranty Explained

Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility Company (AFEMC) offers up to 5 years or 100,000 km of free servicing on every BYD electric vehicle sold in the UAE, and 5 years or 75,000 km on plug-in hybrids. Service intervals are 20,000 km or 12 months for EVs and 10,000 km for hybrids. The 8-year Blade Battery warranty and 6-year vehicle warranty are among the strongest in the Gulf.

The AFEMC free-service package: what's included

The 5-year free-service period is the strongest piece of the AFEMC value proposition. It is included with every BYD sold through an official channel and runs from the first registration.

What every visit covers across the AFEMC range:

  • High-voltage battery inspection and diagnostic scan.
  • 360-degree multi-point safety inspection.
  • Brake fluid level and condition check.
  • Coolant level and condition top-up.
  • Cabin air filter inspection and replacement when due.
  • Software updates and TPMS recalibration.
  • Tyre rotation and wear assessment.
  • Underbody and battery enclosure inspection.

Plug-in hybrids also receive engine oil and oil filter changes at every interval, plus brake-disc and pad wear measurement, and the petrol-engine air filter.

EV versus PHEV: why the interval difference matters

The 20,000 km versus 10,000 km gap between EVs and hybrids is not a marketing choice. It is a manual-verified mechanical reality.

  • EVs have no engine oil to change, no spark plugs, no fuel filter and no exhaust system. The service is essentially fluid checks, software and an inspection.
  • PHEVs still have an Atkinson-cycle petrol engine that runs whenever the battery is depleted. Oil chemistry and the petrol-side service items follow conventional intervals.
  • For a UAE owner driving 20,000 km a year (about the national average), an Atto 3 sees one service visit per year, while a Song Plus or Shark 6 sees two.

This is part of the EV's hidden cost advantage. Over 5 years, a hybrid owner makes roughly 10 service visits versus 5 for an EV owner.

Service contracts beyond the free period

Once the free 5-year package expires, AFEMC offers structured service contracts that lock in fixed AED prices per visit for years 6 onward. Contracts are typically sold in 3 to 5-year extensions and bundle parts and labour.

Why owners take them:

  • Predictable monthly cost-of-ownership budgeting.
  • Discount on the per-visit rate versus pay-as-you-go AFEMC service.
  • Service history stays continuous, which protects resale value.
  • The contract is transferable if you sell the car, adding to its resale appeal.

The pay-as-you-go AFEMC rate for an out-of-package Atto 3 service typically lands between AED 600 and AED 900 per visit. A Han or Seal can run AED 1,200 to AED 1,800 depending on what is needed.

The Blade Battery warranty: 8 years, 250,000 km, 70%

This is the part of the AFEMC paperwork that gets the most attention from buyers and rightly so. The headline terms:

  • 8 years from first registration, or 250,000 km, whichever comes first.
  • Capacity must remain above 70 percent of original rated capacity.
  • If the pack drops below 70 percent within the window, it is replaced under warranty.
  • Diagnostic data is logged by the car and verified through AFEMC's BYD-certified diagnostic equipment.

By industry standards, a 70 percent floor is generous. Real-world LFP packs rarely reach that level within 8 years; BYD's own testing data suggests Blade packs typically retain 85 percent or more capacity at the 8-year mark in normal use.

Vehicle warranty: 6 years or 150,000 km

The vehicle (non-battery) warranty covers the rest of the car. Drivetrain, electronics, software, switchgear, infotainment, body and paint. The 6-year duration or 150,000 km cap means most UAE owners are covered for the entire ownership cycle.

Three things typically not covered (read the fine print):

  • Wear items like brake pads, tyres, wiper blades.
  • Damage from accidents, modifications or use outside design parameters.
  • Servicing outside the AFEMC authorised network.

Warranty transferability: a hidden resale advantage

Both the vehicle warranty and the Blade Battery warranty transfer to the next owner automatically when you sell a BYD through any normal channel. The service contract, if you have one, also transfers.

This is more valuable than it sounds. A Toyota or Mercedes "extended warranty" is typically personal to the original owner. With a BYD, a 4-year-old Atto 3 still comes with the balance of an 8-year battery warranty and 6-year vehicle warranty, all of which transfer to the new owner. UAE used-car listings have begun showing the remaining warranty period as a selling point.

Common pitfalls that cost real money

  • Skipping a service interval voids the free package for the rest of the period and can affect warranty cover. Book the appointment within 60 days of the 12-month or kilometre trigger.
  • Using an independent garage for "just a small job" can break the AFEMC authorisation chain. Even an oil change at a non-authorised garage on a PHEV is enough to give AFEMC grounds to question a future claim.
  • Not keeping the service book stamped. AFEMC's digital records are the primary reference, but the physical book stamped at each visit is what shows up to a private buyer.
  • Assuming the free package covers consumables. Tyres, wipers and brake pads are owner expense whenever they wear out.
  • Forgetting the cabin filter is a UAE-frequency item. AFEMC will replace it on schedule, but UAE conditions can justify a 12-month replacement even if the global manual says 24 months.
  • Letting a service contract lapse. Reinstating it later is generally not allowed; once the window closes you are on pay-as-you-go.

AFEMC service network and certifications

AFEMC operates 5 to 6 dedicated BYD after-sales centres across the UAE, embedded in or alongside the main showrooms. Technicians are trained by BYD directly and IMI UK certified. AFEMC has invested in advanced simulator equipment for ongoing training, particularly for high-voltage battery diagnostics.

Service centres are located in:

  • Dubai Investments Park (the main dedicated service centre).
  • Al Ain Industrial Area.
  • Sharjah Bu Shaghara.
  • Umm Al Nar (Rabdan), Abu Dhabi.
  • Ras Al Khaimah (Al Dhait).

UAE versus Australian BYD service costs

The Australian and UAE service packages are structurally similar but with different cost realities reflecting the different markets. Our existing piece on how the UAE costs compare with the Australian market covers the Australian figures in detail.

Headline differences:

  • Australia: 6-year capped-price servicing rather than free, typically AUD 200 to AUD 400 per visit (~AED 480 to AED 960).
  • UAE: free for the first 5 years on EVs, then AED 600 to AED 1,800 thereafter depending on model.
  • Battery and vehicle warranty terms are essentially identical between markets.

Net-net: AFEMC's 5-year free-service window saves UAE owners approximately AED 5,000 to AED 8,000 versus an Australian equivalent over the same period.

What to ask AFEMC before you sign a service contract

  • What exactly does the contract include and exclude?
  • Is the contract transferable to a new owner if I sell?
  • What is the cancellation and refund policy?
  • Are software updates and OTA-related service visits covered?
  • What happens if I miss a service interval by a week or a month?
  • Does the contract include loaner vehicles for longer repairs?
  • How does the contract behave during DEWA outages affecting EV charging service equipment?
  • What is the AED uplift on common consumable parts (wipers, pads, filters)?
