Fangchengbao status: a different brand under the BYD umbrella
The Leopard 5, like the Leopard 8, is not a regular BYD. It is the debut model of Fangchengbao, BYD's personalised, off-road oriented sub-brand launched in August 2023 in Shenzhen. Production started in China in November 2023, and from 2025 the model began selling in export markets like Australia, New Zealand and Brazil under the Denza brand as the Denza B5. The Denza version is detuned to around 400 kW (536 hp) versus the 505 kW (677 hp) of the China-market original.

The DMO powertrain explained
The Leopard 5 runs on BYD's DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) super-hybrid platform, the same architecture as its bigger sibling. The setup pairs:
- A 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 145 kW (194 hp) and 273 Nm.
- A 200 kW front electric motor.
- A 285 kW rear electric motor.
- A 31.8 kWh Blade LFP battery in standard trim, or 47.8 kWh in the 2025 long-range variant.
