The Qin Plus is the cheapest new BYD in the UAE at AED 74,900. It targets fleet buyers, taxi operators and private buyers who want a clean, efficient sedan without committing to a full EV.

The Sealion 5 is one of the newest additions to AFEMC's lineup, launched in early 2026 and priced from AED 89,900. It targets young families who want SUV practicality at sedan money.

The Sealion 5 is sometimes confused with the Sealion 6 sold in Australia. They are different vehicles: the Sealion 5 is smaller and uses a newer-generation DM-i system, while the Australian Sealion 6 is sold in the UAE as the Song Plus.

BYD Song Plus DM-i: the all-rounder

The Song Plus has been one of BYD's best-selling hybrids globally and starts in the UAE at AED 119,900. It is the model Australia and Europe call the Sealion 6.

  • 1.5L turbo + electric motor combined PHEV powertrain.
  • NEDC electric range around 92 km, combined range around 1,000 km.

BYD Shark 6 DMO: the 430 hp pickup

The Shark 6 is the only pickup in the BYD UAE range and the only DMO-platform vehicle officially sold by AFEMC. It starts at AED 158,900.

The DMO platform changes the equation. Where DM-i hybrids prioritise economy, DMO prioritises power and capability:

  • 1.5L turbo petrol + dual electric motors (one per axle).
  • Combined output around 430 hp and 800 Nm of torque.
  • 0 to 100 km/h in roughly 5.7 seconds — quicker than most petrol V8 pickups.
  • Towing capacity of 2,500 kg, with a more powerful 2.0L variant rumoured for 3,500 kg.

DM-i versus DMO: the platform difference

The BYD UAE website lists both systems as distinct technologies. The short version:

  • DM-i (Dual Mode intelligent): electric-first, fuel-efficiency focused, used in Qin Plus, Song Plus, Sealion 5. Petrol engine acts mostly as a generator until high speed.
  • DMO (Dual Mode Off-road): power-first, performance and off-road focused, used in Shark 6. Petrol engine and electric motors work in parallel for maximum output.

You pick DM-i for economy, DMO for capability. The Shark 6 is the only DMO option in the official UAE lineup.

Fuel and charging cost reality at UAE prices

UAE petrol prices sit around AED 2.99 per litre for Special 95 in mid-2026. DEWA electricity for residential customers runs roughly AED 0.30 per kWh in standard tiers. Doing the maths on a typical daily 50 km commute:

  • Song Plus on petrol only (5.8 L/100 km combined): ~AED 8.70 per day.
  • Song Plus on electric only (~15 kWh / 100 km): ~AED 2.25 per day.
  • Comparable petrol mid-size SUV (8 L/100 km): ~AED 12 per day.

The PHEV economics work only if you actually plug in. An owner who never charges effectively pays for a battery they do not use.

Common mistakes UAE hybrid buyers make

  • Never plugging in. A PHEV running on petrol only is heavier and less efficient than a regular hybrid.
  • Assuming free Salik applies. The Salik EV exemption is for fully electric vehicles; PHEVs follow the standard tariff.
  • Buying the Shark 6 expecting Toyota Hilux running costs. The DMO platform is closer to a sports SUV in fuel use than a workhorse pickup.
  • Skipping the home charger installation. AFEMC's Charge2Moov bundle is the easiest way; arrange it before delivery.
  • Overlooking the Sealion 5 because the Song Plus has more brand recognition. At AED 30,000 less for similar daily-use behaviour, the Sealion 5 deserves a test drive.
  • Confusing the UAE Sealion 5 with the Australian Sealion 6. They are different vehicles.
