Range articles usually hide their sums. Here is ours, openly, because honest methodology beats inflated claims.

  • The anchor: The owner's manual states consumption of 12.6 and 14.2 kWh per 100 km (NEDC) for the two variants, the only consumption figures BYD itself publishes for this car
  • The packs: Usable battery energy of about 44.9 and 60.5 kWh comes from market specifications, flagged as such
  • The formula: Range equals usable energy divided by consumption, times 100
  • The conditions: For each scenario we assume a consumption figure based on engineering reasoning, stated in the chart, and calculate the resulting range

Every condition figure below is an estimate, and labelled as one. These are calculated projections from stated assumptions, not instrumented road tests, and your results will vary with speed, load, terrain, and temperature.

A Credibility Check Worth Seeing

Before trusting our method, test it. Run the manual's own numbers: 60.5 kWh divided by 14.2 kWh per 100 km gives 426 km, and the official WLTP claim for the Extended Range is 427 km, a match within one kilometre. The Standard Range works out to 356 km against a 340 km claim, close again.

When the manual's consumption figure independently reproduces the official range claim, you know the anchor is sound. That is the foundation the estimates below stand on.

Why Each Condition Moves the Number

The chart's spread is not random, it follows physics, and understanding it helps you predict your own results.

  • City flatters an EV: Low speeds mean little aerodynamic drag, and regenerative braking recovers energy at every stop, which is why city range can exceed the official figure
  • Highway is the honest tax: Aerodynamic drag rises with the square of speed, so sustained 110 km/h costs real energy with no braking to recover
  • Winter hits three ways: Cabin heating draws from the battery, cold air is denser to push through, and a cold pack accepts and releases energy less efficiently, with the manual noting the temperature control system conditions the battery in low temperatures
  • Summer is milder: Air conditioning costs energy, but far less than winter heating, so hot-weather range dips only modestly

How to Live at the Good End of the Chart

  • Mind your cruise speed: Easing from 110 to 100 km/h buys meaningful highway range
  • Precondition while plugged in: Warm or cool the cabin on mains power via remote A/C, so the battery starts the trip full
  • Use Eco mode: The gentler mapping nudges consumption toward the city column
  • Keep tyres at 250 kPa: The manual's pressure, checked monthly, protects efficiency

Winter Range, Specifically

The winter row deserves its own word, because it is where owners are most often surprised. A cold snap can genuinely take a quarter or more off your summer range, and that is normal EV behaviour, not a fault.

The counters are simple: precondition on mains power before leaving, prefer seat-level comfort over heating the whole cabin hard, and plan winter road trips on the winter row of the chart, not the summer one. The car protects its battery in the cold, and the manual notes charging can take longer while it does.
