BYD Atto 3 Child Seat Safety: Complete ISOFIX Installation Guide
Share
The BYD Atto 3 has ISOFIX/i-Size anchor points on both rear outboard seats and the front passenger seat. It supports child restraint Groups 0 through 3 (newborn to 36 kg). Top tether anchors are located at the back of the rear seat backrests. If installing a rear-facing child seat on the front passenger seat, you must deactivate the front passenger airbag using the PAB switch on the dashboard. The rear middle seat does not support ISOFIX or child restraint installation.
ISOFIX Anchor Points: Exact Locations
According to the BYD Atto 3 owner's manual, the ISOFIX anchors are installed in the gap between the seat cushion and the seatback on each applicable seat. A label indicating the anchor point location is attached to the seatback above each anchorage.
- Rear left outboard seat: ISOFIX anchors present, top tether anchor on rear of backrest
- Rear right outboard seat: ISOFIX anchors present, top tether anchor on rear of backrest
- Front passenger seat: ISOFIX anchors present, top tether anchor at back of front passenger seat
- Rear middle seat: No ISOFIX, not suitable for child restraint installation
- Driver seat: Not applicable
BYD recommends installing child restraint systems using the ISOFIX anchorages. If the driver seat obstructs correct installation, move the child restraint to the other rear outboard seat.
Child Seat Compatibility by Weight Group
The following table is sourced directly from the BYD Atto 3 owner's manual and shows which seat positions are approved for each child restraint group.
| Measurement | Child Weight | Front (Airbag ON) | Front (Airbag OFF) | Rear Outboard | Rear Middle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Group 0 | Up to 10 kg | X | U | U | X |
| Group 0+ | Up to 13 kg | X | U | U | X |
| Group 1 (rear-facing) | 9 to 18 kg | X | U | U | X |
| Group 1 (front-facing) | 9 to 18 kg | U | X | U | X |
| Group 2 | 15 to 25 kg | U | X | U | X |
| Group 3 | 22 to 36 kg | U | X | U | X |
U = Universal, approved for this weight group. X = Not suitable for this weight group. The rear middle seat is marked X across all groups.
Top Tether Routing on the Atto 3
Top tether anchors are located at the back of the rear seat backrests. The owner's manual specifies the following installation steps:
- Remove the cargo cover before installing a child restraint with a top tether.
- Remove the head support if it interferes with the child restraint seatback. Store it in the boot.
- Route the top tether strap through the hole in the head support post (where applicable).
- Fasten the snap hook to the anchor support at the back of the seatback.
- Tighten the top tether until the strap is firmly secure with no slack.
- Reinstall the head support after the child restraint is fitted.
Extension straps may be required if the top tether length is insufficient to reach the anchorage point.
Rear-Facing Installation: Why It Matters?
Safety organisations recommend keeping children rear-facing until at least age 4 or until they exceed the seat's weight limit. Rear-facing seats distribute crash forces across the child's back rather than concentrating them on the neck.
The Atto 3 supports rear-facing child restraints in ISOFIX size classes R1, R2, and R3 on rear outboard seats, covering Groups 0, 0+, and 1. When installing an R3 class seat, position the vehicle seat fully rearward first.

Disabling the Front Passenger Airbag
This is the most critical safety step when using a child seat on the front passenger seat. A deploying airbag can cause fatal injuries to a child in a rear-facing seat.
- Location of PAB switch: Front passenger side of the dashboard, accessible when the passenger door is open
- When to deactivate: Always when using a rear-facing child restraint (Groups 0, 0+, and 1 rear-facing) on the front passenger seat
- When to leave activated: When using a front-facing child restraint (Groups 1 front-facing, 2, and 3) on the front passenger seat
- After removal: Reactivate the airbag immediately after removing the rear-facing child restraint from the front seat
The owner's manual states in bold warning: "Never use a rear-facing child seat on the front passenger seat if the airbag is activated."
Testing the Seat Is Secure: The 1-Inch Rock Test
After installing any child restraint, perform a physical check before every drive:
- Grip the child seat firmly at the belt path or ISOFIX attachment point.
- Push and pull the seat forward, sideways, and backward.
- The seat should not move more than approximately 25 mm (1 inch) in any direction.
- Check that no foreign objects are around the anchoring device.
- Confirm the vehicle seat belt is not stuck behind the child restraint.
The Atto 3 manual specifically warns: push and pull the child restraint in different directions to ensure it is securely installed.

Common Mistakes Parents Make
- Leaving the airbag on with a rear-facing seat. This is potentially fatal. Always check the PAB switch when using a rear-facing seat on the front passenger seat.
- Forgetting to reactivate the airbag. After removing the child seat from the front, switch the airbag back on immediately.
- Installing on the rear middle seat. The Atto 3 does not support child restraints in this position. Use the rear outboard seats only.
- Skipping the top tether. The top tether prevents the child seat from rotating forward in a crash. Never leave it unattached.
- Not removing the head support when it interferes. If the headrest blocks proper child seat contact with the seatback, remove it and store it in the boot.
- Using non-approved seats without checking. Always verify that your child seat manufacturer lists the Atto 3 as compatible.
Questions Parents Ask
"Can I fit two child seats in the back?"
Yes. Both rear outboard seats have independent ISOFIX anchors and top tether points. The middle seat remains unusable for child restraints.
"Does the Atto 3 have three ISOFIX points?"
Yes. Two rear outboard plus one front passenger, totalling three positions.
"Is the Atto 3 safe for families?"
It holds a 5-star ANCAP rating and supports child restraints from newborn to 36 kg. For all safety systems, see our Atto 3 ADAS features guide.
"What else helps when driving with kids?"
High regen mode gives smoother city braking for sleeping children. The V2L feature powers bottle warmers on road trips.
